Painting with oils

I am attempting to paint a picture for my bedroom, using oils onto a canvas 24" x 24". The picture is a yellow rose and I remember from my A-Level art classes that I should start with a watered down wash using a colour on the opposite colour spectrum to the main colour blocking in the picture in dark and light tones. My problem is I do not know what colour to use as the wash when the main colour is yellow! Help please anyone......

I think purple's the opposite of yellow. So mix blue and red.

Obviously you won't mix water with oils. You could do the wash in watered-down acryllics or oils mixed with linseed oil or turpentine. It's only a background wash. Get your hands dirty!

Yeah I use the term, watered down. but know that turps is used! I will try purple then thank you
