Witch hazel is an astringent, rather like aftershave lotion is.
i.e. it stings like hell on damaged or inflamed tissue. If you'd be happy to rub aftershave up there, feel free to try witch hazel; otherwise please don't bother ;-)

get a prescription ointment called XYLOPROCT from your quack - did wonders for me
my midwife recommended witch hazel after i had the baby (cuts, stitches, infection and all the nastiness) - i read the bottle and thought the same as you, but she said to take no notice and go for it - and she was right! just try a tiny bit and have a bath at the ready just in case!? or do like the others suggest and get some prep H or similar - i know how painful it can be (had them after childbirth too actually - and the witch hazel didn't seem to cause a problem that i can remember....
Yepp....Witch Hazel is an old fashioned and time honoured treatment for piles, it would be my first choice.......but so be it.

Make sure that the pain and bleeding is due to piles.
ooops! it would NOT be my first choice.
sqad nor mine, any problems in that area, if persistent need looking at.
The skin is quite delicate around there and can get damaged easily.
sorry to say i do know, and the last resort was surgery.
