my hause wiring and wylex box are 40 years old approx,i know i should fit a new comsumerunit, buy ive heard that they sometims cause a lot of problems ,tripping out for the slitest thing,( i know thats what they are designed to do) ?? do you think my existing wiring will be ok, thanks
How are we supposed to know that?
If the wiring is surface, and you can check a lot of the fittings, you may be able to make a judgement.
You have Sockets, Lights, Cooker and Immersion heater fuses?
A new unit should work fine, so long as no leakages to earth .. like into walls, etc. That's a common problem with really old builds.
Get an electrician to do a PIR (Periodic Inspection Report) of your installation which will tell you the state of it and make recommendations as to improving/updating it. This will cost £125-£200+ depending on the size of your property/number of circuits. I, for example, typically charge £125 for a 2 bed terrace and £175 for a 3 bed semi. Takes a couple of hours on-site plus writing-up time, so if he's in & out in 30 minutes he ain't done a proper job!!
You should be aware that changing the Consumer Unit is NOT a DIY job and requires a registered, certified, electrician and certification to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations.
