Internet Problem

I must apologise in advance for not being awake yet - so if this question is more muddled than my usual questions this will be why.
I have a new PC which runs Windows 7 and I am using Firefox.
I had the PC working the way that I wanted it to work - but the last firefox update messed up some of my settings.
I want to be able to click on to an email address on a website and for the Gmail screen/window to pop up in either a new tab or new window.
When I click on the address it does go to the Gmail screen but using the same window. I can (and do) right click and tell the computer to open the Gmail in a new tab/window.
Where do I go to change my settings?
Thanks

I want to click the email address and for the Gmail screen to pop up in a new window. What is happening now is that it just takes me there on the same screen - and I still need to access information on the first screen.
I have been doing it this way for years - but I can't remember if the PC defaulted to this or whether it was me who set it.
It isn't a massive problem - more of an annoyance.
Thanks for your suggestion.
