Cheques showing up in online banking

A fairly simple question (I hope)

I have a NAtWest bank account and I manage my account online. I wrote a cheque on monday and am waiting for it to clear my bank account. Now ignoring how many days to does or doesn't take to clear my question is 'what time of day' can it show that its cleared.

For instance if I check my account at 9am and it hasn't cleared, is there a chance that if I check again at 3pm it may appear there? Or do all transactions suddenly show at midnight (or whatever).

Sorry if the above isn't clear :-(

No, with NatWest if the cheque hasn't debited your account when you check first thing, then it won't go out of your account later that day, it will be the next day (I used to work for NatWest).

Mine seem to be at anytime...but I'm not with NW.
I think this varies according to your bank's practice. My "sum available" changes quite rapidly after a card transaction, for example, but the details may not appear for another day and seem to be posted about 1.30 am.

with card transactions the system knows it has been made and alters available balance to stop withdrawal of funds before it can actually be debited.

Thankyou Cheekychops. I know debit card payments and withdrawals show up immediately but the cheque thing has always been a mystery - until now

Thanks again folks :-)
If the beneficiary of the cheque also banks with Nat West and you have a 'real time' bank account, it could show up at some time during the day, ie: when the beneficiary pays it in, if that makes sense.
