Not sure where to post my question, I am going to Tolthorpe Hall tomorrow with my daughter and her new boyfriend to see Hamlet. I have never been to anything like this before (I am 77 and female) and am at a loss to know what to wear. It is an evening performance and the weather does not look too promising. Thank you Janet,

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I remember the last time I went to the theatre I wore my top hat and tails. Everyone else seemed to be in casual clothes. I felt a tad overdressed.

I just looked up Tolethorpe Hall and the auditorium is outdoors, but covered.
So, you should be OK without a brolly. I would guess that it could be a bit chilly , though, so I think I'd go for 'smart casual' trousers and top with a jacket or a fleece for when it gets colder.
Don't worry. As bednobs says, it will be dark anyway and no one will see what you are wearing. Also agree about being comfy. It's quite a long play...

Hamlet can be 4 hours long. I suggest very comfortable clothing and even a cushion to sit on!

Thank you all for taking the trouble to answer. I have decided on a pair of trousers a top and jacket as suggested. I find these days that wherever you go you are more likely to be overdressed than underdressed which I think is a shame. Once again thanks for your input x Janet

In case it rains - take a bin-liner to sit on. When we went to see Meat Loaf at Leeds Castle, it rained so much that we got inside the bin-liners.

You should take a warm coat with you - it gets cold sitting still, and a cushion - it gets hard on those chairs. Include a bottle or two of water and some chocolate which you can discreetly consume, the sugar will keep you a bit warmer as well.
