I want to have a spreadsheet that shows the times of the day in 5 minute intervals in first column - 8.30, 8.35, 8.40 and so on. I've tried to format this but it defaults to another number.

Anyone know how to do this??!

Thanks

A custom format of hh.mm (or h.mm gets rid of the leading zero) works for me.
Trying it again and have found that it's easier if the cells initially have a time format, otherwise you have to work out the time as a decimal (8:30 is clearly 8.5 hours but 8:35?)

So create a couple of cells, one containing 08:35, the next 08:40. Then change the format to custom h.mm. Finally select both and drag them to fill all the cells required for the full duration. Doing step 3 before step 2 produces the same result.
I do it this way.
Click on Format
(scroll to bottom) Format Cells
Number
Select TEXT
press OK
My earlier postings have been been bugging me ever since because of their waffliness, so excuse me if I try again:

The default delimiter between the hours and minutes in a time is the colon ':' whereas you are using a dot '.' which Excel is taking to be a decimal point and thus it assumes that your entries are numbers. If you enter the times as 8:30, 8:35, 8:40 and so on, then it should all work as you would expect.

Finally if you must have the times displayed as you have typed in the question, i.e. using the dot rather than the colon as in 8.35, then select all the time cells and change them to use a custom format of h.mm
