I have a 6' high brick wall along with an equally high garden gate. the gate has 2 slide bolts on it and a padlock. the padlock is never locked but very difficult to open the gate with the height of it.

Recently someone has trespassed on my yard and stolen a mountain bike, stupid i know leaving it in the yard. this isnt the first time this has happened, someone entering my yard.

What security measures can i take i.e. barbed wire round my wall, is this legal? The other obvious one i know would be CCTV.

Any advice?

no crazy you can't put barbed wire/glass around your wall 'cos if the thief hurt himself you'd be in bother....
The simplist option is CCTV! Unfortunately any injury or death sustained by somebody on your land is within your liability under current statute.
CCTV is the best option for you. Here i want to suggest one more thing that is video door phone. It is the cheapest solution to secure the house from strangers and unwanted salespersons. If you would like to improve the security level of your home, the best way is to use video door phones.
