We concluded the binmen had taken it, possibly because they'd knocked the wheels off or something, and asked the council for a replacement, which arrived without query a couple of days later.
So it might not be the neighbours.

well, again sherrardk it might well have been knocked off by the thingummy that lifts bins and empties them into the lorry, and there's no way they would tell you they've just wrecked your bin.
Alternatively the local foxes' co-op may have got together to do it to make your food scraps easier to get at.

It was a normal black bin with the number on it. Tomorrow I will be having a look at neighbours bins just in case. A few years ago we had a very large pot of day lilies stolen. They were in the front garden, not visible from the road so a bit of ferreting about had to be done. Next morning after I discovered they had gone I spoke to a neighbour about it, he said he had seen a pot about a quarter of a mile down the road, broken in pieces and the plants strewn about. Some real little s**ts about. Had to type this twice as lost internet when I tried to submit.
