Thanks go to Sky Sports News for the reminder.

I can still remember settling down to watch this match and I was so clenched! TBH, I didn't give England a hope in Hell of getting a result. What a night this was though. Second only to '66 for achievement by an England side.

So true Judge N.
A time when we had a decent team and a good manager.
I was so certain we would lose (and I could not face that) that I went out in the evening so I did not have to watch it.

When I came home and was told the score was 5-1 I did not believe them and thought they were joking.
It's embarrassing how we cling to a few obscure good victories from the past and then celebrate them every few years. It just goes to show how poor the England football team has performed over the last forty years apart from one or two exceptions.
It was a fantastic result given Germany's home record..I remember we were under pressure early on but it was an amazing win.
One of our finest :-)

I suppose the ironic thing was both qualified for the World Cup in Japan & Korea and Germany reached the Final ..We lost to Brazil in the Quarter Finals...Hey Ho!
''. . . and this gets better, and better, and better . . . Germany 1, England 5.''

I am Scottish and we too celebrate our, quite few and far between, famous victories... in the above case the sad fact is that Germany went on to reach the final while England were knocked out in the quarter final (I know they did better than us lol).

I'd say England's best achievement other than '66 was Italy in 1990 when they were very unlucky not to reach the final.

What a great game and day that was. I'd just arrived in Amsterdam dashed to A supermarket for some beer and made it to my Bro's Half an hour before kick-off.
