Buckfast Wine

Why the big issue with Buckfast Wine these days? The maddies and neds assumed to drink it can't afford it (about £7 a bottle) and it is about 15% average, about the same as a decent bottle of red wine. Beats the 3 for a tenner trash that my folks drink!

Devon and Cornish pasties are essentially the same, but those things they call pasties in Dorrrset....they can't be termed that as they use mince and not chuck beef....

I wouldn`t know about that. My mother used to make good pasties. I don`t like much carrot or swede in a pasty. Good beef, potato and lots of black pepper should suffice.

the original pasties use to have a divider with stewed apple on one side, a complete meal for the tin miners - akin to the "agricultural" rectangular "pasties" that they make in Bedford today...

Yes, they were a complete meal. Savoury one side, sweet the other. When I was in Devon last week I brought back some pasties from Blackwells in bideford. The best pasties ever in my opinion. They do a roaring trade from a little shop. I like to freeze them but they are never the same as fresh. If they didn`t have a million calories in, I would eat them every other day.

I have heard that they are good - I am way down the county near Truro - we have quite good ones from Bodmin and there's not a bad pastie near Mylor (Falmouth) though their pastry is a little flaky (in texture not consistency!).

QAnd if you make it down here, Bordeaux's, south of Camborne are very good.
