why is petrol sold in litres?
and if it's to do with the EU, why are cars still made quoting MPG? Shouldn't it be MPL?

For me 1.0936 yards or 39.37 inches in a metre is as natural as three feet in a yard. Or 2.205 pounds in a kilogram, 4.54 litres in an Imperial Gallon.
And I really don't care whether minus 40 degrees is in Celcius or Farenheit.
I remember visiting Peru in the 1990s where they measured distance in kilometres and fuel in US gallons. They had km/USgallon.
