A Question About 'Sex'

Can anyone tell me what the word 'sex' means in Middlesex, Sussex, Essex etc.

Also, when did it come about (I'm thinking Roman times, but that's more of a guess).

sex is for saxon as opposed to angle _ ie middle saxons south saxons east saxons

So that's after the Romans, in the early Middle Ages. The Angles were East Anglia.

No, the Angles and Saxons (and even the Danes and the Vikings) intermingled throughout the country. The Saxon invaders originated from Germany.

I did some research after reading your post and I found out that they are correct that sex in those places names are for Saxons. I just didn't get why they made it "sex".
