Waterproofing fabric - can I use tent spray?

I am experimenting with adding a showerproof coating to ordinary non-waterproofed fabrics, and I wondered if using the kind of spray like nik-wax that you use on camping gear would do the job. Has anyone else tried this, or do you have any thoughts?

What do you mean by "ordinary fabric"?

Interesting one Chuck as it would be 'cotton sailcloth' I will work with, ie a smooth twill weave 1005 cotton.

yes i have used tyre wall black spray on a raincoat its not black its a clear silicone spray, its cheap from any discount motorist store wilkos etc and it works ok
