Why can't you give out e-mail addresses?

Why is it that users on here are not allowed to publish their e-mail addresses for other users to contact them?

You can't get any personal information about someone from their e-mail address, other than maybe their name and if someone was to be bombarded with hoax e-mails it's easy enough to have them sent to a junk file.

I don't actually have a desire at present to share my e-mail adress with anyone, I'm just curious as to why it isn't allowed?

it's assumed that the throwaway email is a one-off...and not to be left on site so all and sundry can get in touch.

create a new thowaway for each occasion and never use it again....make it as far from your own as possible.... but I agree one must bear in mind the number of site users who are are not so much Barking, but Romford, Ilford and the rest of Essex too

FAO LoftyLottie, just an example of protecting your privacy...there is nothing on this link other than your answer bank posts...but that's why I was saying use a different username for other (personal) sites

The whole point (if I understand Ed's motives) is that there have been in the past - and still are - people registered on AB who troll and hound people they take a dislike to. We say what we want to say on here, it's open and it's fun, but we don't post photos, our usernames say what we want them to say, most of us don't use our names. It's not FaceBook, apart from CB it's a Q&A site. There have been some seriously nasty people on here in the past (some before my time) but thanks to the new Site Rules and the vigilance of those who keep an eye on the site, we are (fingers crossed) reasonably OK at the moment.
I wouldn't give out my personal email on here any more than I would give you my phone number, I might use a throwaway though.

I gave my Email address ( which is the only one I have )to someone recently on AB for a copy of the Spectator Crossword .He sent me a copy ..I thanked him and that was that . Tons of Email addresses here .

If some arse decided to give me a hard time just because they got hold of my Email address they'd get short shrift I can assure you .
I have no idea how to create another address anyway so trust that people would not abuse me .
I have neither the time or the patience to resort to setting up throwaway addresses ( even if I knew how to do it ).
If someone gets my address and wants to give me a hard time then they are welcome to do so .I'm quite capable of pressing delete and also quite capable of telling them where to bugger off to :)

Anyone could store your e-mail address, I don't know how the spammers got mine but I've had a dozen or so shifty e-mails from abroad.

I get loads of old spam askyourgran .
Nigerians offering mega money,viagra merchants , and what have you but I just delete them .I know its a pain but that's technology for you :)
I know all my people on my email ..anybody dubious get binned straight away .
I don't even open them .

emu. When I type my ABuser name in your link (as I did before) I get only one other link to photobucket. No AB posts. Seeing as I have a throwaway address for LoftyLottie that doesn't appear on that link I don't understand what you are saying. Unless I am misunderstanding you?

I don't use other personal sites except for facebook (rarely) and on that I use my own name and proper email address.

I get loads of spam and just delete it.

I have one email address that I only use for friends and have never had any spam on it whatsoever in many years. As soon as you start buying things on line, etc. then I'm afraid spam happens.
