If somebody is given a life sentence and is subsequently released after serving x amount of time, he is on licence for the rest of his life.
ANY breach of the licence and he is back inside, 'recalled to prison'. No trial, just straight back in.
He can only live at approved addresses, must report to the probation officer regularly, must allow the probation officers access to his home.
He must get permission to be away from home even for one night.
He must ask for permission before travelling abroad, and this permission is rarely granted.
Conditions of licence can include being barred from certain areas, being barred from associating with certain people, being barred from doing certain types of work and there may be a curfew.
So it is not exactly freedom.
