Veterinary nurse training
5 Answers
Does anyone know about how to go about training to be a vet nurse in practice rather than through a degree course? I have looked at the rcvn website but it is so confusing and no straightforward answers, i am already at university and will come out with a degree but i have changed my mind and want to be a veterinary nurse. It says you must be eployed in a training practice before you can apply for the course but what kind of vets would employ someone with no qualifications to work there?
Any help appreciated! Thanks

"It could be an advantage when looking for work as a trainee or assistant if you have relevant experience – for example, volunteering with a local vet, or in other kinds of work with animals, such as local kennels or RSPCA centres.
You can make your details available to veterinary practices with vacancies by joining the British Veterinary Nursing Association Employment Register".

I would have thought - similar to "people nursing" - that you could be employed as a veterinary care assistant (if there is such a thing) and then apply for the course once you have that job. I'm basing this on my limited knowledge of nursing training, where you have to have placements and start to be exposed to all the tasks which you would be doing when you become a registered nurse. A training practice in this context will either take students from elsewhere or will train its own students - obviously you could only do very limited tasks for them until such time as you pass your course. Ask your local vets whether they know who are training practices in your area - it may be like GP surgeries, some are training practices, some aren't.
My degree currently is in animal science so it is not completely irrelevant but doesnt enable be to hop straight in to nursing! But i find the ewbsite so confusing and not really explainng much, i dont have much work experience i think while i finish my last year at university i may try and get some experience in the vets before i finish. i can find a list of practices and some are close to my uni and some are in my home town so if i strike it lucky my work experience could become my training centre.
