Yes, I used 13a as one of the eight. Couldn't find the actual change in Chambers, but I'm sure it's a word. Have heard it many times in the golfing sense.

Thanks, I'd checked its existence, as a verb, in Chambers - but was concerned that I was simply making it fit when I should have been on another word altogether.

Investment is an a word used in military to mean a Siege. High fliers - speculative shares

... or, more likely in the parsing of the clue, 'siege' is the collective noun for Herons.

They're scattered sadly! I'm probably being too picky but I think I'd have enjoyed this one more if they'd lined up cleverly somewhere, or if the new words had been relevant to the theme. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Indy-trier, I have now found them all. Yes, tidier would have been nice, but maybe too easy. There are remarkable few words in the grid that can take such a change, and remarkably few eight-letter presidents.
