Taking food abroad.

I am going to stay with my family in Cape Town this Xmas and have a recipe for a lovely "light Xmas cake",not a dark heavy one which stays in the cake tin forever.

I would like to make and take one with me...do you think I could put it in my hold luggage in a tupperware box..or would they think it is a "cake bomb" :).

I know as a rule food stuff has to be vacuum packed or tinned but just wondered if I could get away with it.

Any thoughts?

I would put it in my suitcase in the hold. I'm not aware of any ban on cake leaving the country.

if you wish to take the love it or hated marmite,put with luggage in the hold

PS that says you can put in your hand luggage, so I would imagine that hold luggage (in an airtight container) would be the same!

You might just want to check with your own airline though, kloofnek - just to be on the safe side, before you cook!

I took a Christmas Cake (traditional heavy fruit type with marzipane and iced)in my hand luggage when I traveled to Turkey. Didn't have any problem, although I did have to open up the box it was in for them to look.

I took bacon and sausage to Bulgaria not long ago, I out it in my suitcase, all was well there

Yes,probably a good idea to check with airline,KLM,in this case..why didn`t I think of that...must be old age creeping in on me,:)

As you are going outside the EU you need to be sure what's allowed into South Africa.
