A further note - I can get a free comprehensive travel policy that covers my belongings/cancellation etc etc but it DOESN'T cover any pre-existing medical condition -

I had cancer in the last 2 years, but I'm fine now so need medical cover to cover me on that area whilst abroad

Am I allowed both?
An analogy:
You can choose to insure your house and contents separately or on a single policy. It's entirely up to you.

Similarly you can insure the separate elements of your holiday either in a single policy or through two separate policies. Again, it's your choice.

Sometimes a single item might be covered by more than one policy. e.g. you might have an insurance policy for your mobile phone but also one which covers your house contents. If your phone is stolen from your house, you can choose which policy to claim under (but it's illegal to claim under both in order to make a profit).

If you're still seeking an insurer who will cover you for your pre-existing medical condition, try this specialist broker:

Thanks for replying Chris.

The thing is though with the first policy that I want to cover me for cancellation etc and belongings - could they void that element of the policy if I witheld my medical condition? (I'm probably overthinking this!)
If you claimed, under that policy, for loss of belongings, they'd probably never even find out about your medical condition. It would only be if you had to cancel because you needed to go into hospital that they might start asking awkward questions.

I suggest phoning Able 2 Travel to see what policies they can offer you. (It's not just me recommending that broker. They're recommended on the websites of several charities for people with disabilities or medical problems). You might well find that a single policy, covering all contingencies, will be cheaper than just medical cover only (in the same way that it costs me less to insure my car 'fully comp' than it does for '3rd party' cover!).

Thanks. The question arose because I am entitled to a free insurance policy because of my airmiles and it's a good one for material items and cancellation etc. But I was having trouble finding a policy online that was affordable to cover ALL aspects. I suppose I'm best getting a separate no frills medical cover and keeping the other one for anything else that goes wrong. That way it'll be the cheapest I think!
The trouble with having two policies would be that if you had to make a claim, each insurance company would tell you the other one should pay.
