Couldn't decide where this should go so-What is/are the oldest coins, by minted date, still in circulation? And, what is the oldest coin you have in your purse/wallet? TIA

I think the oldest UK coins still in circulation will be the 10p, but that's just abit of a guess. I have no coins in my purse at all either!

Discounting gold sovereigns (which are technically legal tender with a face value of £1) the oldest coins still in circulation are 1971 1pence and 2pence coins.

10p was updated in 1992, Dot. The larger one prior to the update isn't legal tender any more.

So does that mean there are some 1 and 2ps about that were minted in 1971? The oldest coin in my purse is a 10p from 1992; the other one is a 1p from '94

I was watching a show the other day that said something like 90% of bank notes contain traces of drugs.

Can you imagine what is on a coin that has been in circulation for 40 years! eeeuuggghhh.

Also 1 and 2 pence coins from before 1992 are not magnetic, after 1992 a magnet will pick them up.

Ah so that answers my question, I'm a bit of a geek ad find it quite amazing that there are still 1ps from then! How much was 1p worth in 1971 compared to now then?
