Working at my desk the other night, out of the corner of my eye I caught something moving - a fairly big spider running around my envelope holder (a largish wooden box with four slots to hold the contents vertically). There he was running up and down the envelopes, appearing and then disappearing into the dark depths of the box. Now, where spiders are concerned, rationality fails me completely, and if my husband is out when I spot one, as he was on this occasion, the only way I can deal with it is to suck it up the vacuum cleaner (yes, I know - wicked!). However, this fellow was a speedy little blighter and there was no way I could touch those envelopes to see where he'd gone.

I sit here now ...... knowing he's still around ....... somewhere. Urrrgh!

I usually flatten them with a flip-flop or suck em up the hoover!!
Sorry haven't read all the answers but if it is in the floor, put a glass over it (mind its little feet) and then put a piece of card underneath, it will walk on the card and you can then put it out the door (or window).
I used to be an arachnophobe. One night when I was living in one room above my office, I came home after working late to see a massive, black hairy spider across the room from my bed. I was too tired to cope with it, so I drew a line across the floor with my finger and said "You stay on your side. I'll stay on mine and we won't have a problem." I went to sleep. Next morning, I woke up to see spider just across my imaginary line. It was dead. I've never had a problem with spiders since.
Thankfully, after a fit of the screaming heeby jeebies, I go get ASBO (one of the cats). He LURVES them.
I once put a glass over a huge house spider but then left it till the morning (they are a tiny bit more tolerable in daylight). Next morning all that was left in the glass was 4 legs. Uuuuurgghhh I hate them.

They don't bother me too much but I have to take them outside if I see them, (I'm not their God, they can live) I read somewhere that the average Human eats about five a year whilst they sleep. the thought is gross so on their way they go.
I should think that putting a house spider out in bad weather in winter would be a death sentence so I take 'em out of the bath carefully and put them underneath where its nice and dark.
you're probably right seadogg, but not one of them has ever knocked on my door and started complaining.
can't kill them, and can't have them wandering around either!.......I put a glass over them so that they're trapped, and then my husband puts them outside!.......if he's away, then I panic and call for my neighbour to help!.........he knows how I am with spiders!.....they freak me out!..
Is a fear not different from a phobia though? I am fearful about not getting a job but I don't have a phobia of it.
