Improving Internet sound quality

I am doing an on line interactive language course, and having slightly impaired hearing, find some voices unclear. My headphones have an in-line volume control but I would like to adjust the tone (Bass or treble) as well. Is this at all possible please?

Possibly, it depends on the options in your sound card control centre. but without even knowing what version of windows you are running it's a bit tricky to point you in the correct direction.

Double click speaker icon in system tray to open Mixer Panel.
See if there is an 'advanced' button. They're in there!

Failing that .. buy some small 2-way speakers to plug in?

Albags, thanks. I have found that I have installed 'Realtek HD audio manager' which, when I doule click the icon brings up a screen that looks amazingly complicated. Would that be of use? It's a PC I have.

Yes .. look for treble bass settings in the mixer uinder advanced maybe ..

My first PC came bundled with separate powered speakers – with I would guess around 1W rms power output. But the speakers include a stereo headphone socket, volume, bass and treble controls. Although extremely basic – the controls allow me to correct for the sound source and quality of headphones & my hearing.

Such a set of powered speakers would be ideal for you – but after doing a quick search, these features seem to be very rare on PC speaker systems available today.

Thanks to all. I plucked up the courage and entered the installed 'Realtek HD audio manager' which turned out not to be as daunting as it looked, fiddled about with various settings and made the speech clearer. Fortunately there is a 'Reset' option so you can always return to the default settings. My PC is an newish ASUS model, and I think it comes with it. The headphones with a tone option would be a good idea though.
