Memory sticks are not the best place to keep something safe.
They are small and very easy to lose or get stolen.
If documents are important then keep them in a number of different places, such as:
On another PC
On CD or DVD
On an external hard drive
Uploaded to a web site that can store files for you (SkyDrive from Microsoft is free, there are others)

Plug your USB memory stick into the slot, and the PC should see it and treat it much like any other drive. You can copy to it in the ususal fashion, but may be worthwhile to use the 'safely remove hardware' icon, bottom right, to minimise the chance of problems when you remove the stick.
I find they fail too often for my liking. Ensure you have your important documents in a number of places just in case.
