Right of way

in this day and age is it not archaic to have a 'right of way' through the back garden My house was built in 1929 when laws were slightly different is there anyway I can close this entrance off either legally or otherways

I think that you can apply to the local authority to have a path diverted (around your garden) A local farmer near me recently did this as a path went right through the middle of his yard.

There's a distinction between a "public footpath", which is for everyone and anyone's use ........... and a "right of way", which may benefit only a particular person(s) ...... such as someone who needs it to reach his property.

Any idea which?

If it is a right of way to a nearby property, then speak to your neighbour, who will have the benefit of it . With their agreement you may be able to move it to an agreed position. If you close it and block passage to another property, you may find your self in a expensive legal situation.
But if it is a public footpath you may get the council to divert it, I beleive there is a charge for this.
