What exactly is this man famous for. I really dislike him but don't have any reaosn so I'm trying to a) find one or b) change my (uninformed) opinion

He was a very successful TV and film director, producer, screenwriter and critic, having worked his way quickly through the ranks from a young age. He has directed Hollywood films notably 6 with Charles Bronson (Death Wish etc). He owned his own film production company. He has always been a success at whatever he's done in the entertainment world. Now he is a rich (very) playboy and can afford to be smug & cocky and poke fun at the "establishment". He appears to be enjoying life to the full. Brits love to hate anyone successful and it seems to be a national pastime to knock people off their pedestals, which may explain your (perhaps subconcious) reasons for disliking him.

Thanks Folks.. I am surprised at his achievements and I haven't seen most of them so I'll have a watch and see if I appreciate his talent. Just to make a point - it's not his success I dislike. From what I've seen/ read/ heard it's his disdain for the average man in the street (who buy the very nature of the industry he is in are responsible for said success). He seems to look down on the common man but maybe I have him all wrong. I'll enjoy checking out the movies though.

I don't think that he has a pop at the common man, but he loves to snipe at authority. Love him for that.

He does ooze slimyness doesn't he?? and as for his impressively long list of films I can only say never mind the quality feel the quanitity eh folks? Hardly anything among those to trouble the good folks at the Oscars.
