Defragging problem

I've been trying to defrag my nieces PC. It says there are some errors which have got to be sorted by Scandisk. However, when I do that, a message to the effect of 'The drive content has changed. Something is writing to the hard drive' comes up. I've looked on the task bar for anything that might be running and switched off the screensaver. Any other ideas?

Yes, or F8 (if memory serves).
also a good idea, to Ctrl Alt Delete if on xp and see what processes are running. you might have something unwanted there.
