The phases of the moon determines when we have a Spring Tide. This happens at Full Moon and New Moon. At First Quarter and Third Quarter we have Neap Tides.
We've just had the autumn equinox, which gives a particularly high tide.
Thanks divegirl and boxtops, my mum was asking - for some reason expecting me to have all the info- apparently a mega high tide in Dundriesshire and got us wondering!
Being a fisherman we have a spring tide at the moment here in the Bristol Channel, its almost a 14mtr tide which is about as big as it gets, we have the second highest rise and fall in the world, the Severn bore should have been a good one over the last few days.
Cheers webbo, where my ma lives, near dumfries, it is a biggie, guess its not that far up the coast as the crow flies! Do you know what she is on about with the twice a year happening with the tides? seen the bore on tv before but don't think they get anything like that round where she is.
They happen more than twice a year, there are spring tides in feb, march, september and oct, and some big ones in nov, as for Dumfries they will be the same dates but as for the heights I dont know as I only have a tide table for the Bristol channel.
