Digital TV Combi Recorders

I am looking to buy a new TV Recorder to replace my old VCR recorder. I want one that has all three recording formats - Hard Drive, DVD Disc and VCR Recorder, I have seen them advertised but I am not certain if they can actually record onto VHS tapes, I know they will playback Video tapes that you already have but I would like to be able to still record onto tapes as well as onto DVD discs, so I can watch them in other rooms, whilst still having the convenience of the Hard Drive for recording a series of programmes. I have seen a Toshiba RDXV60D DVD and VCR Recorder 320GB HDD in Argos for £299.99, could this be what I am looking for. Many thanks for any help. Kath.

Kath - if you look at the description of this item on the Argos website, it says that it records to hard-drive or disc and PLAYS VCR tapes. So, the answer is "no"
I'm not sure (in these days of digital TV viewing) that anyone makes a machine that records to tape. Sorry.
However, this item is available from Radio Times offers and their description says it WILL record to VHS! How useful this will be after "switchover" is debateable.

Thanx gingejbee, this is the dilemma I am I am having, they don't actually state that they will record onto tapes although they call them VCR's which we all know are Video Cassette Recorders. Maybe someone out there (UK only please) will know if there are any. Kath

This Panasonic from Maplins says it DOES record to VHS and is available as a "B grade" (ie marked or returned but with a 12 month warranty) at £190.

I used to record on a VCR from a digibox so why not from a digital recorder

According to the Toshiba website is does record to VHS tapes.
I've got an older model Toshiba and that definitely records to VHS tapes, HDD and DVD

Best of luck in your search, but you may want to consider how much, financially, this convenience of watching in another room is worth; when in affect you are investing in a technology that's on it's way out. You may be better off getting DVD players for the other rooms/TVs.

Hi SlackAlice, yes that is the one I was looking at, can you tell me if it is possible to record 3 different programs using each of the recording formats at the same time whilst watching a different channel ( I don't want much do I, haha). Kath.

Only record on 1 channel at a time. You've only got a single tuner. You can obviously record one programme using the pvr and watch another on your tv

Aye you'd need one tuner per simultaneous use. Most kit has either one or two. So that would be a max of recording 2 at he same time, or watching one and recording using the other.

Once recorded you can transfer to a different format at your leisure, later. But I come back to the idea of having different recorders (rather than merely players) in each room and then you can set each to record something different just so long as you can feed the signal to all at the same time.

Thanx everyone for all your excellent replies. So the Toshiba RDXV60 is a definite no no. If I can't get one with all 3 recording formats then I will be looking for one that has a Hard Drive and a DVD Recorder. I shall go to Currys at the weekend and see what they've got. Kath.
