I am looking to buy my first car but don't know much about them. Can anyone recommend a model/make I could start with that wouldn't cost me too much to insure etc?? What about engine size? Thanks in advance!!

It all depends on your age really. If you fall into that 17-21 age bracket, then the insurance is going to be a killer on a car with an egine size anything bigger that a 1.4. Cheap cars to insure, includes, citroen saxo, vauxhaul corsa, nissan micra etc. These tend to have an engine size between 1.0 and 1.4. Hope this helps.

stay 1.4l or below, for cheaper tax and insurance. No turbos or injection engines.

I'd go for something like a Corsa 1.2 or Fiesta 1.3. I wouldn't get anything to new as your bound to scratch it - nearly all of us do it at first.

I've got a 1998 Nissan Micra (it's my first car) and it's very cheap to run. Insurance is always expensive now, but I'm sure it would be dearer with another car. I pay the cheaper road tax and it doesn't gobble up petrol. It also requires very little maintenance. I just get it serviced once a year and I haven't yet needed anything major done. Apart from that I just check it over each weekend.

It's not the sexiest car in the world, but it's very reliable.

You can't go wrong with a Ford Fiesta as a first car - cheap parts (unlike Japanese cars), cheap insurance, cheap to service.

im 21, i passed my test nearly 2 years ago and i have driven only citroen cars - thats just the way it has worked out! both my old ax and my current saxo were / are cheap on insurance and with being a small car the tax is only 60.50 for 6 months or 110 for 12 months. the saxo is only a 1.1, although it is an injection the insurance is still quite cheap - that said i am female and we do tend to get cheaper insurance neways but a smaller car will be ure best bet......
