I 'think' I've got an answer for 12 across - but can't work out the wordplay

With 12 across I'm thinking that the implement is an eolith, but this makes no sense to 10 down (atis) or am I on the wrong track completely?

12 is one of the clues with a double definition. Needing is the extra word!

So the clue isn't necessarily a straightforward cryptic clue? (I don't have the crossword to know what instructions there might be, and I haven't been able to come up with an answer to 12a yet).

Ripper has the correct answer for one of the definitions in 12 & only needs to alter 1 letter for the other. On completion of the grid he must then figure out which answer to insert! ;-)

bibblebub unfortunately the instructions wouldn't make any sense without the crossword, but thanks for all your help.
Micky666 I'd worked out that 'needing' was the extra word, I'm just having problems with my grains & implements - I'm pretty sure that the implement should be an eolith (?) but I'm completely grainless!! Any hints would be appreciated (birthday yesterday, bit of a sore head today!)

It's the first letter that differs in the 2 possible words for 12a. The ones I'm struggling with are 19a and 35a. Can anyone give me a hint please?

19 across is a north American name for a sort of Sandwich - think High Street sandwich shops (I'm not very good at giving clues!)
35 across sort of rough fabric - (rodent and adolescent)
