I've just spent a very lazy afternoon watching Murder at the Gallop with Margaret Rutherford and Flora Robson - a real blast from the past. It was wonderful. Robert Morley was in it as well. It was such a delight to listen to the way they spoke then, I don't think many people speak like that at all these days.
Margaret Rutherford was the best Miss Marple in my opinion, closely followed by Joan Hickson. The other Miss Marples haven't been a patch on them.

Totally agree hellywelly. I loved Margaret Rutherford.
I used to love those old Margaret Rutherford fims.
Some of the black and white films were great, I like to watch them again. They all spoke the Queens English and were very polite, Whistle down the Wind and Hobsons Choice were good.
I like Hobson's Choice as well gran but my favourite black and white film is Mrs Miniver.
I loved Margaret Rutherford, too, but didn't think that she made a great Miss Marple. i believe Agatha Christie actually knew Joan Hickson & wrote the character for her. Joan Hickson was my favourite Jane Marple.

It was nice that Margaret Rutherford always insisted that her husband had a small part in her Miss Marple TV series.

The later 'Marple' series is rubbish, in my opinion.
Margaret Rutherford + Agatha Christie = very good

Margaret Rutherford + Noël Coward = totally superb!
nah joan hickson was best.
and murder at the gallop was a poirot originally!

I think that BOTH of the BBC's resident Miss Marples have been great. (Joan Hickson on TV and, perhaps surprisingly, June Whitfield on radio)
I'd forgotton Mrs Miniver. Margaret Rutherford and Alistair Sim were good in the old films, St Trinans.
I doubt very much Christie wrote Marple for Joan Hickson. The first Marple was published in 1926, when Hickson was a very young woman.
