Good culture quotes?
12 Answers
Hi everyone,
I was wandering if anybody knows of any good quotes by anthropologists or sociologists that can epitomise culture?
This one made by EB Tylor in 1871 is quite good:
"[Culture] is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, arts, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society"
Anybody know of any others? I'm doing a bit of research for my dissertation. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Art rather than culture, but a good start. Pound is very good at this stuff sometimes.

"Culture... is an historically transmitted pattern of meanings embodied in symbols, a system of inherited conceptions expressed in symbolic forms by means of which men communicate, perpetuate, and develop their knowledge about and attitudes toward life" (Clifford J. Geertz (b.1926) Peddlers and Princes: Social change and economic modernization in two Indonesian towns. Chicago: University of Chicago Press)
"Culture does not change because we desire to change it. Culture changes when the organization is transformed; the culture reflects the realities of people working together every day."
— Frances Hesselbein
The Key to Cultural Transformation, Leader to Leader (1999)
"It is a bad plan that admits of no modification."
