When do you use a "x" on an email, after your name?
I have been emailling a new friend who used to be a lecturer of mine (I am older than him) and he always signed his emails "Best", or "Best Regards" or "Cheerio". The other day I got one just signed "x". I may be reading too much into this, but it seems really out of character for him to have done that. He is normally quite formal. We have been exchanging silly and funny emails.
How would you respond? I usually just sign my name, unless I am writing to a close friend. The fact is, I really do like him but don't want to scare him off or read too much into it! Any thoughts?

Just send him an x too - I have a chatter exchange with someone in the US that has developed to xxxx and x and we use "love" from time to time......yet to meet up but we do share an awful lot in common.
The friendship is becoming less formal and I agree with DTC, add 'x' by all means. Who knows the next one may have ♥ - sounds like you are well suited, try to relax.
I'd say don't put an x on your next one unless you are deliberately trying to develop something. (It may possibly just have been a mistake by him; I sometimes get my signoffs mixed up.) If he does it again, then go ahead (if that's what you want).

Thanks for your replies. Yes, jno, that's my worry; he sent it late on a Sunday night so the chances are he could have been tipsy after his roast or something! Anyway, I've replied with ":) x" so I guess I shall just wait and see now. I'll keep you posted anyway.
You use an 'x' on an e-mail after your name when you feel like sending a kiss the the recipient.

I guess responding in the same way can be passed off as a bit of a leg-pull if the original 'x' was in error. No harm in giving a nudge though.
I once had a txt message that read: 'Love you honey see you soon X' closely followed by ... 'oops wrong number Bro..' I was gutted ;-)

I do often sign off with a xx with family and friends but maybe this guy is testing the water so to speak to see if your interested in getting closer.
Not as bad as the message I sent to the wrong number the other week :-/
Do tell.
After sending a few e-mails to my bf one morning I then sent one to the accountant, followed by XXXX. He was quite flattered. I was quite embarrassed.
It said 'Happy Friday you big fat c*** xxx love you' and I sent it to someone with the same name as my OH. It's a new phone....lol
LoL.. U-mmmm (is your name working correctly?) I'm sure he laughed. I've being told off for using stars in txts they are more like hieroglyphs when I send the message.

as for my own it's A Holly Valance calling card with the xx (song)
Yes, you can say my name now :-)

The person I sent the text to doesn't have my number.....and I have no plans on ringing him either...lol. It's my cousin...When I broke my phone my aunt sent me a list of numbers and I just got my son to put them in the phone. I've deleted his number now :-)
testing... Rumpelstiltskin ;-)

I bet he's still waiting....

Sorry for digressing a little Sade... I wish you well if you decide to progress with the X.
LMAO
Yes, I do this and I also do this after posts on the Answerbank as well.
