I'm trying to avoid putting the heating on until around the beginning of November. (I was brought up in a house where Bonfire Night meant we could finally light a fire in the grate. Later, I spent 15 years teaching in a school where the heating couldn't be switched on until after the 'October break', irrespective of how cold it might be. It's too early yet to put any heating on!)
