At a "Y" shaped entrance with space for two cars to pass each other on each leg of the "Y", is it correct if one is turning right, to take the right leg out of the drive instead of treating it like a roundabout?

Out in the sticks where there are no markings, you may as well play 'spin the bottle'.
The real worry is where the road markings tell you how to use the junction, but the old dear in the Micra that is giving me a lift ignores them and gets it all wrong.
