recent phone call from supposedly BT.I received one last night about 7pm .The caller said that BT were concerned that my BT Broadband was running slow , and if I would switch on my computer, they would give me details of a web site which would correct this.
Said to the man that the Broadband, I have was not with BT , and that I was not interested in listening to what he had to say.He tried to explain that other providers fell within his remit. But was rather dubious by this time and ended the call.
Any ideas anyone what it may have been about? Thank you.

sounds like its along the lines of the microsoft scams.
they will find a way of showing you your pc has a virus, usually by proving your PC has a perfectly innocent folder.
Then they will ask you to allow them remote access to your PC by going to a wesbite and then charge you for removing said virus.
Plus, whilst they have access to your PC they may be removing information for it.
never trust any of these calls. BT/ broadband companies and certainly not microsoft would never care about your PC and what its speed is etc.

Had 2 similar calls myself this week. I just tell them it's running slowly because I don't have broadband. They soon hang up and yes it is just a scam to get you to either part with your card details or give them info about your PC so that they can put some software into it and get bank details etc from it.
I had a young man smartly dressed in a suit knock at the door who said he was checking Broadband in our area with a view to getting it for me for free.He said all he needed to do was make one phone call from my landline and he would be able to ascertain whether or not I qualified.Needless to say he was sent on his way.I haven't heard of this happening to anyone else though.
and thats how the manage to scam so many people.
If they said "if your PC has a "start" button on bottom left of screen, it has a virus" you'd know it was a scam. But if they say "its got c:|another file on it, thats a virus" you may not realise that every other PC has that file and fall for the scam to remove it.
