I'm on holiday in Malta and brought my laptop as I was told I could connect to the internet through the internet cafe downstairs to our apartment. However this doesn't work as I need a log in key. Whats the best way of getting onto the internet - not sure how a dongle works or how much it will be and if I buy one can I use it anywhere?

a dongle works by plugging it into you usb port. the one i have is 02 and you are charged for every minute you are on the internet. The prices vary by provider, you top it up like a mobile phone and i don't know but i doubt a maltease provided dongle will work in the uk. Mine cost about £20 and i can't quite remember how much per minute (pay as you go) could you ask the cafe for their log in code (although i doubt they would give it to you)
Given that you're going to have to pay for something anyway, offering to pay the internet café to use their connection would seem to be the simplest solution. (Alternatively, if you only require limited internet access, forget your laptop and use the internet café like everyone else does).

If you go for a dongle, Vodafone seems to be the only company. Dongle details here:

Surely the cafe need to give you the login key and password so you can login to THEIR wi fi.

Every wi fi needs a login key and they will have details of theirs (as I assume they have to give it to anyone else who wants to use their wi fi)
Don't worry about dongles or anything else.
Take laptop to internet cafe, buy coffee, get password, log in.

If your laptop can connect from your apartment, it is a (not strictly legit) bonus so be kind and pop in to the cafe every now and again and spend a few bob

Thanks, we do use the cafe regularly but you know what its like, you want to keep up to date with emails, facebook and answerbank at all hours of the day and night! Am in Valetta in an internet cafe at present and they have told me where the vodaphone shop is so will enquire.
