This afternoon I was sitting in the clinic waiting for my appointment with the doctor. A young man, early thirties came in and said to the receptionist, Can you tell me where the I T department is ? She looked at him and said, we have computers but no I T department. He leaned closer to whisper but he didn't know about my 20/20 hearing, I heard him say, The ingrowing toenail department.

My brother is a senior manager for an American computer company and he often talks about computers and his job in gobbledegook. When I asked him why he says people in the industry talk like that so they can keep their conversations private and lay-people like me don't understand them. He was quite serious too!

On the subject of abbreviations I am always amused that The Federation of Small Businesses has the same abbreviation as the Federalnaya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti (Russian Federal Security Service) (!). The local business magazine is always advertising FSB promotions - bringing your own flask of tea is advisable!
