Writing on the back of his / her trailer, the Number plates, the as in your daughters case TK on or near the Number plate a lot of drivers will not be caught out by been side swiped, a lot of HGVs have kerb mirrors that are above the height of his /her cab door N/S as in left hand drive so when that truck is on a motorway & a car driver sits on the trucks off / s. ( Drivers side) that driver cannot see the car, it only takes a min to get out of that trucks path & can save you what happened to your daughter. I hope that she is well & recovered? but that's one hell of a thing to happen.
All comes down to good coaching and reinforcing the message - do L drivers now get time on practical Motorway driving practice as they bloody well ought too.....
If you go on a defensive driving course held by TRC out of Thatcham (if they are still doing them - and great pressies for adult family day outs for those of you in the London/Oxford area), one of the things they stress is to hold back from the truck before the space clears in front of you and accelerate through quickly - and then pull back in. If there is a second truck to overtake, stay in the outer lane and repeat the process of ensuring there is sufficient space to quickly get through.......
The police do not mind you accelerating up to 90 plus in this and then slowing back - as it shows that you are awake - the real danger being those that sit in the middle or outer lane on their cruise controls blithely ignoring all behind them.
Hope you grand-d is ok now AYG, a horrific experience indeed.
