Can anyone advise if they do a programme that can be used to set up a database?

Appleworks (free download below) now superceded by iWorks which you have to pay for, but a 30 day free trial is available from the Apple website.

Ooops... the above link is an update only, not the actual programme. You're probably better off with the newer iWorks anyway...
iWorks doesn't have a database in it. In the App store there are loads of databases for download, take your pick, the dearest seems to be about a tenner
I'm going to echo the answer the removed poster gave of filemaker pro

It's not cheap, but if you're in the market for an apple compatible database it's the best there is IMO (It's my DB of choice)
''Open Office'' is a free to download and use equivalent of Microsoft Works, and includes a database.
