How to crop using paint.Net

I am looking for some advice as I seem to be unable to crop a photo using paint.Net. I am able to use the cropping tool and can select the area I wish to crop by drawing around it, but that is as far as I can get and I can then see no way of saving the selection or of even showing just the selected area.
I fear that I am being stupid as I am sure that I have used this program before with success but have not used it for some time.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I don't use Paint.Net ('cos I've got a full professional version of Photoshop) so this is a bit of a long shot, but I wonder whether your version of Paint.Net uses the same convention as Photoshop does? If so, cropping is achieved through right-clicking (after selecting the relevant area, of course) and selecting the 'Crop' option.
If you want a freebie which is as good as Photoshop (but with an equally steep learning curve) try Gimp:
