i am baffled why the powers that be chose to do this, they said it was a mistake, but if so, a stupid one.

How can you mistakenly airbrush it out? It sound a ridiculous excuse to me, I think it is wrong not to have it on the poster

seeing how HMS Belfast is an integral part of the landscape of the city, and it's moored in a very prominent position, so not sure why they thought it right to do it. I have been on there any number of times, and it's fascinating look at what life on board ship was like.
I have been round it, a very interesting visit.
in an earlier incarnation of this story there was a picture that explained the mistake a bit more clearly. Essentially a "landscape" version tube poster had the 2012 slogan in white writing right across its centre. HMS Belfast was located under the writing and interfered with its legibility, so the ship was removed (it wouldn't have been very visible); unfortunately it was also removed from different versions of the poster where its absence was all the more noticeable as the slogan was elsewhere.

someone should have noticed, it's a great big ship for heaven sake near enough to Tower Bridge, suppose that had been missing as well.
I can understand an over enthusiatic graphic designer getting rid of HMS Belfast in order to make the visual 'cleaner' because for them the visual quality and layout often outweighs issues of accuracy.

It's a bit sad though that there were no checks and that no one in the 2012 Organisers office knows (or cares) enough about London to spot the difference.

well somebody did, and whoever it was should have their backside kicked over this. Perhaps some jobsworth who thought it might upset some of our visitors next year, but can't see that being the case, seeing how many people we get all year round.
What is a warship doing in London anyway? Why this obsession with killing machines.
Question Author
it's not an obsession, one ship moored on the Thames, and it hasn't fired it's guns in anger for many years. I would add a bit more, but i can't find the right words to say how daft i find your comments.
