What then can happen is a bill comes through the door saying that your payments are increasing due to ther being an oustanding balance on your account. By doing this they have got you twice, once by getting you to sign with them for a certain period and then again by keeping you with them untill your gas electricity account is settled by the increased payments which can take another year to do.
The best advise I can give is to get details from each supplier on how much a KW/H there gas or electricity is how much there standing charge is (if none the price is normally in two stages so you pay it anyway) any deals they have for 'duel fuel' and discount for direct debit.
You can compare utility prices on www.pricerunner.co.uk
Remember to shop around regularly. The energy suppliers are counting on that we will just stay with them and stand any increases they make.
