In fact here is the Microsoft page

What crap, I have upgraded Me to XP without a problem.
Do you have an XP disk (full version or upgrade, Home or Pro - it does not matter)? If so run the Upgrade Advisor, it will tell you what is definitely not upgradable (both hardware and software) and what might cause problems (again hardware and software).
Hardware is easy, just check the net for XP drivers and download them before you upgrade. If there are not XP drivers, some/many 2k drivers will work. Otherwise you will have to decide whether to buy newer hardware, do without the hardware or not do the upgrade.
For software check to see if there are patches to upgrade them to XP, otherwise you will have to decide whether to buy/obtain a newer version of the software, do without it or change to something else.
If you do not have a disk you can download the Upgrade Advisor from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx for the Home version or http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx for the Pro version. Be warned that either download is about 50MB so if you are on dial-up, find someone who has broadband and a burner and get them to download it/them and burn a CD for you.
You will need at least 128MB of memory (and it will be as slow as a crippled dog), 256MB will give acceptable performance, I use 512MB. You will also need a processor that runs at 233MHz or better, 300Mhz recommended and 1.5GB of disk space
If you get the Upgrade version (which is cheaper - in Oz anyway) do a new install, NOT an upgrade. You will need your ME installation disk as proof of ownership.

If you are unsure which version of XP you want to upgrade to then http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx will answer your questions I hope.
Regardless of whether you upgrade or do a new install, backup what you want to keep, My Documents, Favorites, email etc before you start - safety first. I do not trust the Files and Settings Wizard (or whatever it is called) - caused me nothing but trouble.

There could be many reasons...PC not up to spec, components not compatible etc etc etc the list of problems with XP is endless.
But it's PC world so they are probably just trying to get you to throw more money at them, I say forget about PC world and get your PC to a local PC repair shop, every town has one and ask them to save your documents, e-mails etc and tell them you want XP putting on.

Thankyou everyone who replied to my question about upgrading to XP,I will try most of the suggestions .
My wife used to work for IBM a long time ago and we got a discount from them??? 2001 Windows Me was already installed on to the hard drive when we purchased the computer from them,Intel Pentenium 3 also I think it had 40GB of hard drive and 128Mb of memory.Took the computer to PC World to be cleaned also they put an extra 128MB of memory so now have 256MB of memory.
