Nelson's column too short

I thought that Nelson's column was 30ft shorter than it was thought to be.
A quick web search will confirm this.
I also thought that the reason why this was so was because it was French built and there was confusion over the units used - the English ordered the thing using feet and the builders were working in metres - hence the confusion.
I cannot find any refernce to this on the net. Does anyone know if this is correct, or did I dream it, or did it really happen to another building and I am in the wrong by thinking it is Nelson's column?

I'm surprised you could't find the reason behing the reduction in height. It was the government's choice in order to reduce construction costs...
