I'm trying to determine which version of Word I'm running. When I upgraded to Windows 7 we just transferred the one I had already; when I open it, the 'title page' comes and goes so quickly that I can't read it. Clicking on Control Panel hasn't helped, as for some reason Word isn't listed in the programs. I think I need a newer version - or is there a better alternative?

The general consensus of opinion anyway seems to be that there's no need to upgrade - one of the very few applications where that's the case? Many thanks everyone for your help (and I'm so glad that Rojash is pleased).
There's no need to upgrade per se - it will probably serve your needs well for years to come.
However, just for your information, Word 2002 is SERIOUSLY out of date and totally unsupported by Microsoft:

If you're going to stick with an early version of office (which I agree you'll have no problems with) install the office file converter from MS, which will let you open files saved from later versions of office.
