I am the owner of the top flat of a 3 storey house.
The owners of the other 2 flats and i will need to get the outer part of the entire house totally refurbed, inc the roof, all the brick work, guttering, the reception door and now they tell me that their windows will also need changing. I am just wondering if they can force me to also finance their window replacements, i ask because before they moved in about 6 years ago, i got all my windows replaced for new ones of course. So i´m just wondering where i stand legally.
Can you check your lease? Do you have a management company to whom you pay a maintenance fee? If so ask for everything to go through them and you'll know exactly what's what.
We had a flat in exactly the same arrangement and had to do our own windows and doors but chip in for communial areas and roof.
thanx cfs. thats quite a lengthy website, plus a little difficult to navigate :(
couldn´t find anything to advise me regarding the window costs.
will have to take another look tomorrow.
As an owner, it should say in the lease documents about contributing to maitenance, as Maidup says. Our daughters lease on her flat says she has to contribute to roof repairs and supporting walls. We have paid for repairs to floors, windows etc for her. I think it is likely most leases are similar. If you dont have a copy of the lease, you should be able to get a copy via Land registry for a few pound.
The lease advice.org has a helpline so you can talk to them if you need to. But before you do, get out your lease & check the details - as already advised.
