i am still stuck on a few in the latest rainbow quiz any clues appreciated

37 single scotsman at sales knocked over the plant (8,4)

79 character at home with novice indicates on a compass (8,6)

this is my first one of these and i haven't got into their way of thinking yet!!

37. First word is the actual name of a wise king - whole thing is a plant

23.English prime minister also there is an author of the same name.

79. North, south,west and east are known as these.

thanks i have worked them out now.

i have an answer for 77 but need to know how it fits the clue?? maybe i got it wrong I have SHEPHERD????
