The Secret Garden

I always ment to read this book but after being car sick over it as a child (never read in a car!) I have been totally put off. We have it on DVD but I don't want to spend my 'my' time watching a childrens film. Can anyone give me a brief run down of what it is about, thanks.

How did you remember that? I went to Southwold from Dunstable as a teacher, still the most Sugar day out ever (even worse than Wookey Hole!).

I meant the characters, basically, Mary, as a child is not wanted and cannot cry or show emotion. Colin has always been told he is so sick he will die and must be bedridden and he will never walk. Mary finds the secret garden. The end result is Mary cries, Colin Walks. The end.

i love this film. does anybody know if the house where it is filmed is the same house as downton abbey?

Go on and watch it, I enjoyed the book when I was at school (back in the Dark Ages) and subsequent tv series and the film. Don't think of it as a children's film, more of a family film. I'm in my 50's and my daughter is in her early 20's and we still watch these sort of films together

I absolutely love that book and still have it on the shelf. That and Jayne Eyre both fired my imagination as a child. Too difficult to explain what it is all about.

Would agree, it's more of a family film than a children's film. And the film is nowhere near as good as the book, although it is still enjoyable.

I took my son to the cinema to see the version Maggie Smith version.
Once the film had ended, we had to wait for the cinema to empty 'cos he didn't want everyone to see his pink eyes and blotchy face from where he had been crying..........aaahhhhh!! :o)

TheWinner has pretty much summed the plot up, but as is usual, the film is 'really' about so much more.

The 'AB Secret Garden' remake features Askyourgran and Albaqwerty seeing sugar-plum fairies at the bottom of their garden (?).......then they realise it's just Trigg, Snagsy and Chuckers with tu-tu's, and heavy make up on...........there is a special guest appearance by the Ed as Norm Gnome, a shifty, dark character, leader of the Gnomes, who try's to secretly nick ladies confectionary items, such as chocs and cake.

Boo stars as Greedy Gertie, a northern lass, who sits on most of the cakes to protect them. Fluffpot is a happy chocoholic, who has the hots for one of the said-mentioned fairies, even though his idea of a good time, is playing Battlefield 3 and fiddling with his joystick.

Now that i would read. :0)

The film version with Maggie Smith is really really wonderful. I watch it over and it stills brings a lump to my throat. Lovely scenery and great backing music. Great performance from the father too (John thingy that was the cad in Sliding Doors).
